My friends, AOC went on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, and she said something I actually agree with: "Woke One was crazy."

She's right. It was crazy. The problem is the way she said it — like she was watching from the sidelines the whole time instead of leading the parade.

Jonathan Karl asked her about Wisconsin governor candidate Francesca Hong, who back in 2020 wanted to cancel Thanksgiving and called for abolishing prisons and defunding the police. AOC tried to jokingly say that Hong has moved past those old positions — and what difference does it make now anyway? Then, with a chuckle, she borrowed the "Woke One was crazy" line from a New York City councilman — like it's a punchline instead of a confession.

AOC didn't just witness Woke One. She was one of its largest champions. She helped make those woke ideas mainstream among Democrats.

Now, five years later, the midterms are bearing down. Even Hillary Clinton admitted it on a podcast this week: the communist-socialist label is landing on her own party. Suddenly it's all just an embarrassing chapter everybody's supposed to quietly turn the page on.

I want to be fair here. People can't actually change their minds when they're committed to an ideology the way the radical left is — that very rarely happens. But when it does happen, that's real growth.

The problem is, that's not what's happening here. Nobody's disavowing "abolish the police" on the merits. Nobody's actually explaining what's wrong with it. They're just laughing about how crazy it all was, hoping the rest of us laugh along with them — and forget that they were the ones pushing it on us in the first place.

My friends, if your only move is to gaslight voters and hope nobody brings up the receipts, you didn't experience a moment of growth. What really happened is that you got caught, and you're trying to find a way out of the consequences before the 2026 midterms.

My friends, as Rush Limbaugh used to say, words mean things. They matter. Policy positions matter. And if a politician spent years telling you that defunding the police and abolishing prisons was the right path, and now wants to earn your vote by gaslighting you, you would be completely justified in asking which version of themselves shows up if they win.

Don't let them get away with laughing this off. It's a real problem, and there should be real consequences.

Hillary Clinton said something on a podcast this week that's worth thinking about. She told her own party that the "communist, socialist" label Republicans keep using on candidates like Michigan's Abdul El-Sayed is landing — and landing hard.
