My friends, the U.S. men's national team lost to Belgium 4-1 last night in the World Cup, and I want to talk about it — not because I'm a soccer guy (I'm not, though I coached my kids' teams badly enough to know the basics), but because of how some people reacted to the loss.
Here's the backstory. One of our better players, Folarin Balogun, was suspended out for receiving a red-card suspension from the previous match against Bosnia & Herzegovina. President Trump got on the phone with FIFA, and the suspension got overturned. Now I found that wildly entertaining because the this made heads explode on the left. Whether a president should be calling FIFA is a fair question to argue about — but it's not fascism, and it's not objectively wrong.
Belgium beat us anyway, 4-1, then posted "Overturn this" next to a photo of one of their star players. Fine — that's trash talk, and I don't mind it that much. My daughter has a shirt that says "overrate that," the iconic line uttered by Tyrese Halliburton during his phenomenal NBA playoff run in 2025.
What I don't get — what actually bothered me — is how many people on the American left were happy we lost. Not indifferent. Happy. One guy commented that watching the outcome "go to sh*t" after Trump "touched" it was the whole point. That's not sports fandom. That's Trump Derangement Syndrome wearing a jersey.
This reminds me of something from my own life decades ago In high school. I ran the 100-meter dash in a conference championship, finished second in a “photo finish,” and simply accepted the outcome — because that's an athlete's job. However, others — including my dad — wanted to appeal the decision. In my mind, the race was over. My job was to run. It was the business of others to challenge it if they thought the judges got it wrong. It wasn’t until a newspaper photo a few days later seemed to indicate that I may, in fact, have actually won.
To my way of thinking, other people are free to make appeals, question decisions, and even call FIFA presidents. I don’t see what the big deal is.
If I were on that U.S. soccer team, I'd want FIFA to get the red card right. But I’d also understand it wasn’t up to me. My job would be to play — with or without our star player — depending upon the final ruling. I would have to be ready either way.
And you know what? If Biden or Obama or Kamala or Clinton or AOC were president, I’d feel the same way. But plenty of folks on the left are incapable of doing that. If Trump is for something, they have to be against it, loudly and dramatically, even if that means rooting against their own country's team in a World Cup. It’s ridiculously stupid.
You don't have to like soccer. You don't even have to like Trump. But rooting against America because of who's in the White House isn't conviction. It's contempt, and it's aimed at the wrong target.
