My friends, CNN is rolling out a documentary on the “rise of Christian nationalism” just as Lent begins — right in the middle of an election year. Coincidence? Ha! The timing certainly fits a familiar political pattern: when a narrative isn’t gaining traction, turn up the volume — especially in an election year.
Beneath the headlines and the alarmist rhetoric lies a far more important question — one that every American should wrestle with:
Where do our rights come from?
The Declaration of Independence is clear: our rights come not from government, but from “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” Government does not grant them. It secures them.
That distinction changes everything.
If rights come from government, then government can redefine them, restrict them, or remove them. If rights come from God, then government is accountable to Him.
And that’s the real issue.
If rights come from government, they can be revoked. If they come from God, they must be protected.
Now let’s address some confusion intentionally being sown about “Christian Nationalism” and what Christians desire in this nation. Acknowledging biblical moral foundations is not the same thing as advocating for a state-run church. The Founders rejected a national church. They also rejected the idea that moral authority comes from shifting political majorities.
You can uphold religious liberty and still recognize that Western civilization was built on biblical foundations. Those two ideas are not contradictions.
Here’s the truth many won’t say out loud: it’s not “the Bible or nothing at all.” Every society builds its moral foundation on something — the real question is which foundation we choose. We can build on unchanging truth, or we can build on shifting human opinion. Either way, there will be a moral foundation — the only choice is whose moral foundation it will be.
Will it be rooted in enduring truth? Or in whatever ideology happens to control Washington this year?
These are not small questions. They go to the heart of liberty, law, and the American experiment itself.
Conservative, not bitter.

Todd Talk: Dramacrats Boycott Trump’s State of the Union
My friends, sometimes politics feels less like governing and more like high school drama.
Next week, when Donald Trump delivers the State of the Union, some Democrats plan to boycott and attend their own silly little event on the National Mall, hosted by radical groups like MoveOn.org. About a dozen Democrats are reportedly participating.
Protest is part of politics. But this isn’t protest. It’s Dramacrats being Dramacrats.
Hakeem Jeffries plans to attend. He says Trump is “coming to our house,” and it’s his view that you don’t let anyone ever run you off your block.
Even when they do the right thing, they remain petulant.
Adults show up. Listen. Debate.
But maybe they’re on to something. If their tantrums happen off-site, it’s a whole lot easier to ignore the infantile behavior.
