My friends, I took a few days off from behind the mic, but I didn't take the week off from thinking about this country. And I know you didn’t either — which is why I imagine you enjoyed hearing from my dear friend and guest host this week, Krish Dhanam.
Krish is the Dean of the Patriot Institute down in Comfort, Texas, and if you don't know his story, you need to. He landed at JFK forty years ago this spring with nine dollars in his pocket, and his wife found out on that same trip that she'd just lost her job back home. His first look at America wasn't the Statue of Liberty. It was graffiti on a wall in Queens that looked, in his words, like Beirut after a bombing. Despite the obstacles, Krish didn't quit. His bride told him Dallas would be prettier, and that was enough hope to keep him moving.
Krish said hope without gratitude is hopelessness, and change without strategy is cluelessness.
Krish grew up in India watching John Wayne movies, and John Wayne was America to him — courage, true grit, the good guy who showed up and finished the job. Krish's own students at the Patriot Institute don't know who John Wayne is. Most of them don't know Jimmy Stewart either. His read on that isn't nostalgia for its own sake — it's that when you erase a people's heroes, you shrink what they think they're capable of. That's not an accident. That's a strategy, and it's working.
Krish also talked about Christmas night, 1776, when Washington's army was frozen, bleeding through their boots, and badly outnumbered — and they won anyway, because they caught the enemy comfortable and celebrating. Krish's warning is that we're the Hessians now. Comfortable. Distracted by our own fireworks and flag mugs. An enemy that's patient doesn't need to be strong. It just needs us to stay asleep.
Krish argued that the answer is panic — and that's not what this show has ever been about. But gratitude that doesn't wake you up isn't gratitude, it's just a nice feeling.

Fifty-Seven Years Ago Today, We Put a Man on the Moon
Today marks 57 years since Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and said the words every American schoolkid used to be able to recite: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
My guest host Krish Dhanam shared that he watched it happen on a black-and-white TV in a Hong Kong storefront window. He was seven years old, thousands of miles from home, and he still remembers turning to his father and saying, "Wow, what a country — they can put a man on the moon."
That's not a small thing.
A boy who'd never even seen a television before watched America do something no nation had ever done, and it planted something in him that never left. We don't build things like that by accident, and we don't stay a nation capable of building them by taking our history for granted.
Today's a good day to tell a kid in your life what happened on this date, and why it mattered.
