My friends, we've been told for years that noncitizens voting in American elections is basically a myth. A scare tactic. A virtual unicorn. I want to walk you through why that narrative doesn't hold up.
The Trump Justice Department has secured roughly two dozen noncitizen voting arrests, prosecutions, or convictions in just the last few months, with about 90 more cases under investigation. A small-town Kansas mayor born in Mexico. A Filipino senior citizen in Hawaii. A Chinese student at the University of Michigan. Real names, real cases — not talking points.
Why does the Left and the media (sorry to repeat myself) insist on calling this a "rare" crime? Rare doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't happen. It can also mean nobody's been looking very hard for it — or prosecuting it when they find it. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon put it plainly: letting noncitizens vote isn't just bad policy, it's a crime — and DOJ intends to prosecute election officials who knowingly allow it, not just the noncitizens themselves. That's a real shift. Investigators have already found hundreds of thousands of dead people still eligible to vote and tens of thousands of noncitizens on the rolls in the states they've reviewed so far.
This is exactly why the SAVE America Act matters, and why my own senator here in Indiana, Jim Banks, keeps pushing it. It does three primary things: prove citizenship when you register, show photo ID when you vote, and end mass mail-in ballots in favor of absentee ballots you actually request. That's it. It doesn't touch early voting. And it doesn't stop anyone eligible from voting. I helped my own former assistant fill out her absentee ballot back in 2020. She ended up voting for Biden, which I obviously thought was crazy, but I didn’t try to keep her from casting her ballot.
And Republican lawmakers aren’t trying to do that in this instance either.
This is what makes Senator Slotkin's claim — that this "disenfranchises married women" because they'd have to show ID matching a name change — so hard to take seriously. Everyone who's changed their name has already dealt with this sort of thing before. Mike Lee said it best: by that logic, no married woman in America could fill out an I-9 form — which is essential for employment. If she can do it for work, she can do it for voter registration.
I'm not trying to stop anyone who's allowed to vote from voting. I'm trying to make sure every legal vote counts and every illegal one doesn't get cast in the first place. That's not extremism. That's just good government influenced by common sense.

What Does the SAVE Act Actually Do?
With the SAVE America Act back in the headlines, it's worth spelling out — because a lot of the noise about it doesn't match the actual text. It does three things.
First, it requires proof of citizenship — (an) actual document(s), not just a checked box — when you register to vote.
Second, it requires photo ID at the polls, the same free ID my state of Indiana already offers its citizens.
Third, it ends mass mail-in balloting, where every registered voter automatically gets a ballot mailed to them — dead voters and all. It does not eliminate mail-in voting outright — if you can't get to the polls, you can still request an absentee ballot, you just have to ask for it, the same way people have for decades.
And it doesn't touch early voting either, which already exists in the vast majority of states.
In short: the standard way to vote would be to show up in person with an ID. And for those who can’t for travel, health, or other personal reasons, the exception to request an absentee, mail-in ballot stays available to anyone who genuinely needs it.
