My friends, today I want to do something a little different — not react to the news, but go back to first principles. And I want to start with this question: what does conservatism actually mean?

A lot of people think it just means resistance to change, or protecting the rich, or voting Republican. None of that is right. Conservatism, at its core, is the belief that America's founding principles are the surest way to preserve the liberty and prosperity we've been given — and that once you've found the best way of doing something, any deviation from it is, by definition, a step in the wrong direction. It’s like standing exactly on the North Pole: every direction you could possibly step is south. And if you’ve found truth north, any step in another direction is anything but truly progressive.

Here's what that actually looks like in practice. It means individual liberty — the idea that you're responsible for yourself, your family, and your community, not some abstract collective. It means limited government — a government big enough to secure our rights and defend the nation, but not one bit bigger, because the Constitution tells the government what it can do, not the other way around. It means our rights come from our Creator, not from Washington — government doesn't grant rights, it exists to protect the ones we already have. It means personal responsibility instead of the left's habit of making everyone collectively guilty while nobody is individually accountable. It means the rule of law applied consistently, free markets where people can actually solve their own problems, and equality under the law rather than the left's demand for equal outcomes.

None of this is about being anti-change. It's about refusing to abandon things we already know work just because a new ideology comes along with a fancier vocabulary and a cool new slogan.

I'll be candid, my friends: if you live in America today, you are living in roughly the top 1% of every human being who has ever walked this earth, by nearly any measure — life expectancy, freedom, prosperity, standard of living, overall opportunity. That's not an accident. It's the direct result of adhering to ideas that are good and true. If we drift from them, we lose what made us great in the first place.

And that’s exactly what we’re trying to avoid.
